# Weighing scale configuration

> Setting an Essae DS-252 or a Mettler Toledo IND560 to stream weight over RS232 in the format the data logger reads.

The data logger reads whatever the scale sends, so the scale has to be sending
weight on its own, as text, at 9600 baud. Most scales ship that way or close to
it. Two that need a few settings changed are covered here. To check a scale
that is not on this page, use
[Weighing scale compatibility](https://iotready.com/docs/hardware/configuration/weighing-scale-compatibility.md).

## Essae DS-252

Every setting is a numbered code, C10 to C23. You step through the codes and
set each one to the value in the table.

### Keys

| Key | What it does |
| ---------- | -------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Zero | Enters configuration mode, together with the left arrow |
| Left arrow | Moves to the tens digit |
| Up arrow | Changes the digit under the cursor, and steps to the next code |
| Star (`*`) | Saves the value |

### Enter configuration mode

1. Press and hold **Zero**.
2. While holding it, press **left arrow** three times in quick succession.

### Change a value

1. Press **up arrow** until the display shows the code you want, for example
C10. After C25 it wraps back to C10.
2. Press **star** to open that code.
3. **Up arrow** changes the right-hand digit. It only counts up, and goes from
   9 back to 0.
4. To change the left-hand digit, press **left arrow** once, then use **up
   arrow**.
5. Press **star** to save.

### Settings

Set each code to its value. Write down what the scale had before you start, in
case you need to put it back.

| Code | Value | Code | Value |
| ---- | ----- | ---- | ----- |
| C10 | 14 | C17 | 00 |
| C11 | 21 | C18 | 40 |
| C12 | 10 | C19 | 00 |
| C13 | 00 | C20 | 00 |
| C14 | 01 | C21 | 00 |
| C15 | 11 | C22 | 00 |
| C16 | 11 | C23 | 00 |

## Mettler Toledo IND560

The IND560 has a COM1 port as standard. It is a three-wire RS232 interface:
TXD, RXD and GND, with XON/XOFF flow control available. You configure what it
sends with an output template, and tell COM1 to send that template
continuously.

### Build the template

1. In the **Communications** menu, go to **Templates > Output**.
2. Five templates are available, Template1 to Template5. Pick an empty one.
The rest of this page uses Template3.
3. Press **VIEW TABLE** to see its elements. Press **CLEAR** to remove all of
them, then **EXIT** to leave the table.

Now fill in the table:

1. Use **UP**/**DOWN** to select the template and press **EDIT**.
2. Select the first record and set **Element Type** to `wt0102`.
3. Press **ENTER** for more options. Set **Format** to `right` and **Leading
zero fill** to `disabled`. Press **OK**.
4. Press **DOWN** to the next element and **EDIT** it.
5. Set **Element Type** to `special character` and the value to `0x0D`
(decimal 13, the carriage return `\r`). Press **OK**.

That gives one line per reading: the weight, then a carriage return.

### Send it continuously

1. In the connection list, use **UP**/**DOWN** to highlight **COM1** and press
   **EDIT/INSERT**.
2. Set **Assignment** to `Continuous Template` and **Template** to
   `Template3`. Press **OK**.

### Set up COM1

On the COM1 setup screen:

| Setting | Value |
| ------------ | ----- |
| Baud | 9600 |
| Data bits | 8 |
| Parity | none |
| Flow control | none |
| Interface | RS232 |

You do not need to open the panel-mount enclosure to wire COM1. It is the
8-terminal connector at the rear, at the bottom of the panel. Turn the panel
over so the connector faces you. **TxD**, **RxD** and **GND** are the first
three terminals from the left.

### Test it

1. Connect the terminal to a laptop with shielded twisted pair. Cross the
wires, so the terminal's TxD goes to the laptop's RxD and the other way
   round.
2. Open a serial terminal on the laptop with the same settings as above. The
steps for HTerm, `screen` and `minicom` are in
   [Weighing scale compatibility](https://iotready.com/docs/hardware/configuration/weighing-scale-compatibility.md).
3. Power up the terminal and the scale.
4. Put a weight on the platform, or press down on it and let go. The weight
should scroll past on the laptop.
