# Heavy Manufacturing

> Large parts, long cycles and expensive tooling, where knowing where a thing is matters as much as knowing how many there are.

In a heavy shop the material is rarely lost, just somewhere, and finding it
costs a shift. Entry and exit readings at bay boundaries answer most of that
without asking anyone to stop and scan.

## Workflow

**Receiving** - Inbound castings, plate and bought-out assemblies.

1. Read the supplier tag at the gate without unloading
2. Tag the item with a durable RFID label at goods-in
3. Bind heat number and material certificate to the tag
4. Direct to the bay by scan, so the first move is recorded

**Processing** - Work in progress across bays, cranes and outside processors.

1. Record each bay-to-bay move automatically at the gate readers
2. Track tooling, fixtures and gauges to the person who has them
3. Log the outbound and return legs of subcontract operations
4. Surface work in progress by age

**Dispatching** - Assembly, inspection and load-out.

1. Verify the kit against the bill of materials by reading every tag at once
2. Record the inspection release against the item identity
3. Confirm load-out at the gate reader as the vehicle leaves

## What it runs on

- [RFID Reader](https://iotready.com/hardware/rfid-fixed-gate.md): One UHF platform, ordered as Long Range for dock doors and gates or Short Range for point-of-sale and desks - the same read event either way.
- [BLE Gateway](https://iotready.com/hardware/ble-gateway.md): The anchor half of a real-time location system. Wall-mounted, wired for Wi-Fi or Ethernet, and able to raise a local alarm on its own.

## Proof

- [Raw material to finished goods at Vedanta](https://iotready.com/case-studies/vedanta-smelter-inventory.md): RFID across copper and aluminium smelters, with fixed readers tracking the yard-to-plant moves nobody has time to scan and handhelds covering everything else.
